FAQ

Do I need a partner to come to a Tango class or dance event?

No. There are many people who come without a dance partner and dance with a variety of people. Couples are welcome too.

What does “line of dance” mean?

This is the direction of dancing on the floor. Usually people are moving in a circle counter-clockwise around the outer edge of the dance floor circling the center.

What is “Salon Style?”

This is a style of Argentine Tango most typically danced in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There are usually a lot of people in the dance hall and dancers are all moving in the same direction in the line of dance. Dance partners dance together in close embrace and there is a significant lack of flashy leg movements as seen in International Performance Tango.

What is a Milonga?

Milonga is the oldest of the Argentine Tango dance forms. It is more circular and figurative and usually very fast. Milonga is also used to refer to a social dance party where tandas are played.

What is a Tanda?

A tanda is a set of three or four songs. At a milonga, once you are asked to dance or if you ask someone to dance, you are committed to the entire tanda set. This is part of tango etiquette, to remain with your partner for all of the three or four song set.

What happens if nobody asks me to dance?

In the Boise Tango Society, dancers and instructors respect that Argentine Tango is a social dance, and dance with a variety of partners, regardless of ability, at practicas and milongas.

CLASS TIPS

Students are welcome to come alone or with a partner. Usually during class, we rotate partners, so you will dance with several different dancers.

Recommended footwear — hard-soled or leather-soled shoes, so you can slide and pivot. Women are usually most comfortable in shoes with straps around the ankle and at least some heel. Rubber soled shoes should be avoided if possible for both men and women, especially flip-flops, clogs, and gym shoes or sneakers. Dress casually and comfortably.
